Take your first steps to becoming a 3D character artist - learn everything from modelling to painting to animating the character. The course is the sequel to the highly popular Blender Character Creator course, enjoyed by 10s of thousands of students.
This course has been created using Blender 2.83 and is compatible with newer versions of Blender.
Whether you're a beginner or more advanced, the experienced instructors will take you through every step of the process, ensuring that you aren't just "copy and pasting" what you see, but learning the tools and developing your own creative process as you go. For each concept taught this course includes a relevant challenge for you to implement yourself. You can follow along with the Ogre model used in the course, or create your own character using reference material or your own sketches.
The course will show you how to create a highly detailed, great looking character for your portfolio as well as turning that same character into an asset ready to be implemented into a video game engine.
All students have access to the Q&A forums where our Instructors, Teaching Assistants and Community are ready to help answer your questions and cheer on your success
What you'll learn in this course:
- Create a character from start to finish using Blender.
- Block out the basic shape of your character using a standard box modelling approach.
- Use the sculpt tools to shape the broad level details of your character.
- Use the sculpt tools to add fine details to your character.
- Texture paint your character to give it colour and details.
- Rig (add bones) to your character so that it can be animated.
- Animate your character.
- Add your character into the Unity game engine if you choose to do so.
Your Instructor
Grant first started learning Blender back in the late 90’s. He ran a small film company and found the software ideal for some motion graphics work he needed.
He went into teaching as a backup option for when the film work was not so regular. The teaching gradually took over, and he's now been teaching for around 15 years. He moved into teaching game design 6 years ago, which rekindled his excitement for 3D animation. He then began to pick up freelance work and created his YouTube channel Gabbitt Media.
Since then his channel has grown to over 370,000 subscribers, and he's worked on many interesting projects from engineering to 3D printing and creating game models for Atlas Empires.
Now he's here with the GameDev.tv team making courses, and sharing his passion with the community.

"Congratulations team for this amazing course.
I found this course to be a really great way to learn Blender. I did have a little familiarity with the program and 3D beforehand but was pretty lost when trying to do anything before this. They do talk and move fast when modeling and you will need to frequently pause to follow along but I really did find myself picking the program up faster than I expected. "

"A Perfect Course for Beginners. Just finishing the sculpting bit and my friend who's a professional 3D artist, says my skills are already better than his. I am very impressed with the results I've achieved in the course."

"One of the best courses from GameDev, you do learn a lot from this. From a complete beginner to someone who feels comfortable in using Blender and making your own 3D models."

"Very good course for all those who are either starting with blender or coming from 2.79, one of the things i value the most in the courses are how the instructor explains content, here the instructor is very clear and explains exactly what is he doing and why, which gives the student a better understanding of the all tools available, he even goes back and comment about shortcuts or general things related to earlier lessons which makes sure you don't forget anything essential nor get lost within the lesson which is extremely helpful considering the amount of tools, menus, screens and topics seen through the course."
